One control at a time

Elevator — pull and push the yoke

Pulling back raises the nose: the attitude indicator pitches up, the VSI shows a climb, the altimeter winds up and the airspeed decays. Pushing forward does the opposite.

Ailerons — turn the yoke

Turn the yoke left and the left wing drops: the horizon tilts, the turn coordinator's wings show the rate of turn to the left, and the heading indicator counts down. Rate of turn = 1091 × tan(bank) ÷ airspeed.

Rudder — yaw and balance

The rudder does not turn the aeroplane, it balances it. Watch the ball: too little rudder in a turn and the aircraft slips, too much and it skids. Step on the ball to centre it.

Heading indicator

Throttle — power

Power controls the tachometer directly. With the yoke held still, adding power raises the nose on the attitude indicator and gives a climb on the VSI and altimeter; reducing power lowers the nose, and gives a descent and lower airspeed.
